Comics Nick Fury

Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury... am I the only one pissed about this?

Marvel has been known for keeping their characters origianl, unlike DC comics who are always changing their characters stories and plots. Now Marvel is doing the same thing and it makes me sick. The reason I liked Marvel more than DC is because they never changed the storie, and now Nick Fury who has grey hair on the side and black hair on top, wearing a blue S.H.I.E.L.D uniform, and not to mention WHITE!!! Now they have him bald, wearing a black overcoat, and BLACK!!! Don't take me as a racist either because I am not, but the reason I am so pissed is because Marvel is changing up there characters too much. Tell me what you think...

Blame that particular change on Marvel's "Ultimates" series, which transformed Nick Fury into a Black man two or three years ago. If you don't follow the "Ultimates" series, you would probably be confused and amazed at the variant world's differences from the mainstream Marvel Universe. The idea of the Ultimate books (which started with Ultimate Spider-Man just about the time the first Spider-Man film was released) is that new readers would be overwhelmed by the total continuity of the Marvel Universe and wouldn't care to learn everything that has happened since the Fantastic Four first appeared in the summer of 1961; the Ultimates represented a chance to start the Marvel Universe over, for the sake of people who were curious about it but didn't want to be saddled by history (the Ultimate books also gave new readers the chance to feel that they were in on the beginning of something new).

The Ultimate Spider-Man books are apparently not as guilty as the Ultimates (which is essentially the Avengers rebooted from their beginnings) about pandering to shock, titilation, and ourragous changes just for the sake of change. The new Nick Fury is probably one of the least wrenching changes, and that version of the character isn't a bad character at all. For the most part, I ignore the Ultimate Marvel Universe, and I buy very few Marvel comics these days, mainstream universe or Ultimate Universe.

Like it or not, a version of a Black Nick Fury has been floating around long enough to establish the idea as an alternative to the Marvel Universe character you know. I'm not upset by seeing Jackson turn up as Colonel Fury, because he's a fine and watchable actor and I can't think of anyone who would do a better Colonel Fury, assuming that Jackson will be playing the role down the line and didn't just do a one-shot cameo that will not be repeated in the future. It was quite clear from the brief scene at the end of the Iron Man film that Jackson was enjoying playing Nick Fury and that he could take the role and run with it. I do hope to see him play Fury again in the future, but if he doesn't turn up again as Colonel Fury I'll asssume he had other commitments, not that he was jettisoned because "Nick Fury is a white man."
